Flint Ridge, Ohio, "rock hound" may have found an example of a flint and crystal lion head expressed in a familiar scheme

Anonymous rock collector may have found a stunning example of a flint and crystal lion's head facing left at Flint Ridge, Licking County, Ohio. (click photos to expand and compare)

"Little bear from the Boukoul site. V.O.A. Jasper stone under 2 cm" from archaeologist Jan van Es, The Netherlands. (bottom) Ken Johnston interpretation and markup of lion mouth and eye in the photo to illustrate how the bear may be made within the lion head "template" or "scheme." Thus, this could be interpreted as a possible polymorphic piece, lion head and bear. van Es notes the piece is heavily patinated.

Three previously posted Ohio examples are shown below. The last one is patinated in a spot as if rubbed by the human hand.

Here, this photo is reversed to place the artifact in a comparable position to the other examples to illustrate the lion head template. Not coincidentally, also from Flint Ridge (Roy Miller photo).

Here, a lion head with two eyes is one of seven sculptures in an Ohio sculpture hoard.

The size of this Upper Mercer flint lion's head is closer to the Boukoul, Netherlands, example

The Mercer flint is also a side profile of a buffalo facing the opposite way.and on its back side it appears to be sitting.anonymous seems to also be an owl or a woman holdig a dog her face the little red circle at the top it also looks like a face facing down on the blue with a helmet on.what's all the stuff in the lions mouth it looks to be very finely done they look like little cave painting s

it is a bird 2nd pic is sitting the right your mark are all around the wing.

Warren K. Moorehead on the imperitive to collect "rough and rude" art

“… The museums are full of axes, celts, pipes, banner stones, discoidals, hematites, tubes, slate ornaments and ceremonials, pestles, hammers, etc. What the museums need (as of great value to Archaeological Science) are collections from a single locality including everything found in that locality. They want the finds of the village site, the studies in unfinished specimens, the poor and the good, the imperfect as well as the perfect. In this regard, the collectors make a great error. Most of them do not save everything but cling to the ‘pretty relics’ and discard the rough and the rude. Personally, I would give more for a collection, provided it contained all the types, all the finds of a certain valley than for just the fine, perfect objects of that valley. From a collection of the latter, I would be misled, for if I accepted it as indicative of the people of that valley, I would say they made the most beautiful works of aboriginal art, nothing rude or unfinished being turned out by their artisans. In such a statement, I would be unpardonably wrong.”

A book on Siberian portable rock art could provide clues to North American possibilities

Early art of the northern Far East : the Stone Age, by M. A. Kiriyak. This book is about the portable rock art of the Russian north east area. It was written in Russian but has been translated to English by the United States National Park Service's Shared Beringia Heritage Program. The hundreds of iconographic artifacts described and pictured here should inform North American archaeologists regarding the possibilities for art modalities having arrived via Beringia during peopling of the Americas migrations.
